• Dealing with Obscene Amounts of Markers

  Dealing with obscene amounts of overlays (typically markers or extremely long and complex polylines) is not recommendable. Most importantly Google's underlying API becomes terribly slow when dealing with more than 200 markers and complex polylines can create odd effects when scrolling the map. But equally important is the impression for the reader. Who can actually absorb the information that lies in 1000 plotted markers?   Retrieving data from a database is perhaps one of the most common tasks for all but the most static websites. Retrieving data for map overlays is in principle no different from retrieving any other data. The main caveat for this is that if any data analysis is performed while the data is being read back one risks keeping the database connection open longer than necessary. • Clientside Geocoding Explained

  Apart from the serverside geocoding functions available in the licensed version of the control there is also support for geocoding straight from the client. Setting up geocoding from the client can lighten the load on the server and is in theory quicker since Google's servers respond so quickly. • Sidebar Postbacks

  The Sidebar control was originally intended to display a list of overlays and perform clientside actions. However if an item was set to cause a postback it would not be handled on the server. This has now been changed. The following example shows how eventhandlers can be set so that the Sidebar centers on the clicked item, but initiates a postback when the item is doubleclicked.   Google has now included support for polygons in their API and in the version I released today (version 3.2) supports them also as a third internal overlay. • Introducing the ClientGeocoder

  There are numerous services that provide geocoding of IP addresses, mostly for a fee. As I wrote about previously Microsoft has a free IP locator service that runs from a client. This makes server interaction with the data provided somewhat difficult. To overcome this in an easy way I put together a small control, ClientGeocoder, that performs the geocoding using the Microsoft service and then sends a callback to the server where the location can be used. • Introducing the Sidebar Control

  Very often mapping applications involve some sort of sidebar where the overlays are listed. With ASP.NET new ObjectDataSource it is possible to bind the GoogleMap's OverlayCollection to a Repeater or DataList. This is very easy, but to make it even easier I developed a Sidebar control. The Sidebar displays all overlays in the OverlayCollection of a GoogleMap in a table, much the same as if you had tied it to a DataList. Read More...
